Areebah, age 14

India,the land of greatness,

India,the land of vastness,

India, the land of wisdom and knowledge,

but has a poor reputation of depriving a girl child from sustaining education.

My parents pushed education,

Knowing it would emancipate me.

Being a girl child has always been a privilege for me.

I am edified with multiple chores,

much more than that of a socially accepted role of a girl.

knowing it would help me march solitarily,

knowing it would help me access all opportunities.

Being a girl child has always been a privilege for me.

India, a country much known for respecting women up to an extent of worshipping them as goddesses.

I always received respect,

Being a girl child has always been a privilege for me.

I am edified with forbearance,  grace and confidence,

Knowing my hasty soul would be modified with prudence,

Knowing my reckless spirit would be proficient enough to overcome the negativities of the society.

Being a girl child has always been a privilege for me.

But are all girls treated the same?

My soul weeps when I witness the dark side of being a girl  child in our society.

When few girls grapple since the day of their birth,

When few girls are abandoned in this treacherous world.

Being a girl child has never been a privilege to  them .

Has this ever crossed your mind ?

What are they dreaming of

They are dreaming of being pampered the same way their brothers are pampered .

Has this ever crossed your mind ?

What is it to carry out household chores

while your brother’s are given the benefits of going to school and sustaining education.

Being a girl child has never been a privilege to them.

The question that arises in my trivial mind is

Are they not competent enough to dream?

Are they not competent enough to fulfil their aspirations?

Are they not competent enough to get educated ?

Are they not competent enough to name their own destiny?

Are they not competent enough to encounter the privileges of being a girl child?

The sun renders it’s illuminating light to one part of the world at a specific time .

While the other part remains dark ,

we don’t want the theory of the sun to work in this case ,

We want the illuminating light of treating girls equal to boys to be shone upon the entire world .

It’s dawn only after the dusk ,

I am confident that one fine day our society will be proud to acknowledge the fact that  they have raised a girl child .

And every girl child will  proudly state that ,

Being a  girl child was a privilege for them .
